ST. PETERSBURG — A smoky haze over downtown Thursday was not caused by a controlled burn at a nature preserve, officials said.

But they still don't know what caused it.

Fire officials initially blamed a controlled at Boyd Hill Nature Reserve. The city said that wasn't true.

It's true that a memo was distributed last week about a controlled burn at the preserve, but it was canceled.

So the mystery lingers, though not the haze. It seems to have disappeared.
