ST. PETERSBURG — Firefighters put out a blaze at a single-story home Wednesday morning, and in the process rescued a woman's beloved Jack Russell terrier.

Just before 9 a.m., fire crews arrived at 1014 27th St. N and found smoke coming from the back of the home.

The fire was put out quickly, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Steve Lawrence said, and resident Jodi Long's dog, Lily, was rescued from smoke and flames. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Wednesday morning.

There was one person home at the time, Lawrence said, who was able to get out safely because the home had working smoke alarms.

Lawrence stressed the importance of smoke alarms to the safety of any home, and said St. Petersburg Fire Rescue provides them free to families in need. Call (727) 893-7233 for more information.
