Tampa apartment fire displaces more than 15

More than 15 people were displaced early Saturday morning after a fire broke out in an apartment complex unit near Temple Terrace, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

Firefighters responded to 3821 River Vista Lane at about 3 a.m. to find heavy flames showing through the roof, said Fire Rescue spokesman Ronnie Rivera.

A team of firefighters checked each unit for sleeping residents. Many of them stated that their smoke alarms did not go off, Rivera said. No one was injured.

About 15 to 17 people were displaced, including four to five children. Eight units were damaged, Rivera said.

It took firefighters about an hour to gain control of the fire using an aerial truck to battle the flames from above. The cause of the fire is still unknown, though investigators believe it started in the attic, Rivera said.

The Red Cross is assisting the families with food, shelter and clothing.
