Tampa home catches fire Saturday afternoon

TAMPA — A mysterious fire caused serious damage to an Omar Avenue house Saturday afternoon and spread to neighboring house and car before firefighters could put it out.

At 1:30 p.m., Justin Bellwear heard a fire alarm inside 3614 S Omar Ave., and got his 78-year-old, wheelchair bound father, Ronald, outside, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

He then went back and tried to fight the flames that began on the back porch, but found the heat and smoke too intense.

It took firefighters 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which also damaged the outside of 3616 S Omar Ave. and a 1990 Lincoln Town Car parked at a nearby business.

The Bellwear's home sustained at least $200,000 in damage. The American Red Cross was called to help the six adult residents find temporary shelter.
