Hernando County

Fire lesson gives kids the all clear

Hernando Christian Academy students crawl along the floor in a simulated house fire as Hernando County Fire Corps member Roger Braun, 77, right, of Spring Hill guides them in a lesson about how to prevent smoke inhalation. The corps visited the academy, south of Brooksville, to teach students what to do if a fire breaks out at home. Scott Monachese, 36, a driver engineer with Hernando County Fire Rescue, says he wants students to go home and practice safety drills with their parents. "Saving lives is worth more than saving property," Monachese said. The visit is a joint effort between fire rescue and the corps, which devotes its time to service, training and education.
