Three family members safe after St. Petersburg house fire

ST. PETERSBURG — Three family members escaped safely from a house fire in the 2500 block of 1st Ave. S Saturday. At 4:23 p.m., St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue responded to a report of a single story residential structure fire. When fire crews arrived, they found heavy black smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home, and the blaze was quickly extinguished.

A mother and son inside the home were able to evacuate themselves. But a wheelchair-bound grandmother was unable to help herself out. Fortunately, a neighbor came to the aid of the woman and was able to push her to safety, according to a news release from St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue.

The structure did not have smoke alarms, which would have allowed the family to escape sooner, the release said.
