TEMPLE TERRACE — Two 12-year-olds are suspected of setting a fire on the roof of a church Tuesday night, authorities said.
A report of the fire at Perfected Love International Fellowship, 10960 N 56th St., came about 9:19 p.m. Tuesday, the department said. Firefighters arrived to find flames on the roof and quickly put out the fire. They broke through the church's front door to make sure the fire had not spread inside, according to co-pastor Valora Cole. The fire caused an estimated $4,500 in damage, the department said.
At the scene, Temple Terrace police officers found two boys standing near a separate fire behind the building. Their names were not released because of their age.
The state Fire Marshal's Office is investigating and arson charges could be filed, said city spokesman Michael Dunn.
Cole said she did not think the boys targeted the non-denominational Christian church that has about 125 members.
"I think it was just kids being kids," said Cole.
