With pets in tow, Tampa man escapes house fire

TAMPA — A neighbor helped a 59-year-old man, his dog and a pet bird escape a burning home Friday night, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

Firefighters say the home at 7704 N Huntley St. was heavily damaged in a blaze that began about 7 p.m.

Nora Cozart, 31, saw the house on fire and went to help Tom Heyder get out with the bird on his shoulder and the dog in tow, the agency said.

Heyder had burns and suffered minor smoke inhalation. Paramedics took him to Tampa General Hospital for treatment. His pets were taken to a neighbor's home.

Fire marshals have not determined the cause of the fire or estimated the damage.
