TAMPA — A fisherman found a man's body floating face down in a canal behind University Mall on Sunday afternoon, deputies said.
The fisherman alerted a nearby deputy after he spotted the body of a white male in the canal behind the Sears store at about 1:30 p.m., deputies said.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death.
The body was clothed and apparently had been in the water "at least a day," sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway said. There was some trauma on the upper part of the body.
When the sheriff's dive team responded, divers saw a 3- to 4-foot-long alligator in the canal.
Callaway said the medical examiner will have to determine the man's identity and the cause of death, and whether the alligator, which disappeared when authorities arrived, caused any of the trauma.
