ST. PETERSBURG — Don't be alarmed if you see smoke around the Weedon Island Preserve on Thursday.
The Florida Forest Service is conducting a prescribed burn on about 10 acres of land from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., county officials said. The preserve is a nature area located along Tampa Bay near the Gandy Bridge.
About 2 million acres of land in Florida is treated with prescribed fire every year, according to the forest service. Controlled blazes have several benefits, including reducing fuel buildups and helping ecosystems that depend on fire for growth.
