Heat overcomes teens at Spoto High event
Heat exhaustion sent four teenagers participating in a junior ROTC event at Spoto High School Saturday afternoon to the hospital, authorities said.
Hillsborough Fire Rescue was called to the high school at 8538 Eagle Palm Drive in Riverview about 3:45 p.m., after nine teenagers complained of nausea, with some of them vomiting, according to spokesman Ronnie Rivera.
Some 300 teens were participating in the obstacle-course style event, which drew students from 18 schools in the region, Rivera said.
Fire Rescue took three students to a hospital and a fourth child was taken there by parents, all for further evaluation.
None of the students were seriously affected, Rivera said.
Event organizers cut the physical activities short after the incident.
