Hernando's Pine Island open for swimming again

BROOKSVILLE — It's safe to go back in the water near the beach on Pine Island, health officials say.

Bacteria levels in the water near the beach at Alfred A. McKethan Park have dropped into the acceptable range, prompting the Hernando County Health Department to rescind a swimming advisory Thursday afternoon.

The department posts the advisory when water quality tests show high levels of bacteria that may pose an increased risk of disease exposure, especially to very young children, older adults and those who have weakened immune systems.

Pine Island is the only public beach on the Gulf of Mexico in Hernando County. Other public swimming areas near the coast are at Rogers Park, on the Weeki Wachee River west of Weeki Wachee, and at Linda Pedersen Park, along Jenkins Creek north of Hernando Beach.
