Hillsborough deputies say man tried to abduct 12-year-old girl from bus stop

TAMPA — Deputies said Monday that a man tried to abduct a 12-year-old girl as she waited at a school bus stop last week.

The girl was waiting at Orange Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between 8 and 8:30 a.m. last Tuesday when the man parked near the bus stop, walked up to the girl and asked her to get into his car, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office reported.

The girl ran to a nearby friend's home, deputies said, and the man got in his car and fled.

The Sheriff's Office describes the man as between 30 and 40 years old, about 6 feet tall and 190 pounds with short reddish hair and a short beard. He was wearing a brown and blue shirt and blue jeans at the time and driving an older car that is silver or gray with rust spots.

The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to call deputies at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477).
