TAMPA — A Hillsborough County Jail inmate died Wednesday night after he was found hanging by his neck from a bedsheet inside his cell, sheriff's officials said.

The inmate, whose name was withheld pending notification of his family, was found hanging from his cell door about 6:58 p.m., officials said. He was rushed to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A review of the jail's closed-circuit video system showed the inmate walking into his cell alone about 6:01 p.m., sheriff's officials said. At 6:16, a detention deputy saw the inmate sitting on his bed.

The inmate was among the jail's general population, deputies said. There were 66 other inmates in the pod at the time he died.

Further details were not immediately available.
