Man arrested in connection with 2006 Oldsmar shooting

Pinellas County Sheriff's Office detectives have made an arrest in an Oldsmar shooting death that was open for almost six years.

Hector J. Vasquez-Padilla, 24, formerly of Tampa, was indicted by a grand jury on one count of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Marcos Antonio Diaz, 23.

A resident of Odessa, Diaz was found shot to death in the driver's seat of a beige Kia sedan near the Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve in Oldsmar in May 2006.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit filed by Pinellas detectives James Beining and Robert Snipes, Padilla shot Diaz in the head because he believed he had set him up to be robbed during a drug deal.

Padilla has recently been in prison at the Federal Corrections Center in Yazoo City, Miss., on unrelated federal weapons charges. He was brought back to Pinellas County to stand trial in the Oldsmar case.

Padilla was being held without bond Friday at the Pinellas County jail.
