Standoff with deputies ends peacefully at motel east of Tampa

A man who holed up in a hotel room east of Tampa and threatened to hurt himself was taken into custody Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies evacuated the Motel 301 and shut down a stretch of U.S. 301 for several hours after he barricaded himself.

Deputies responded to the motel at 3411 U.S. 301 N, at about 9:45 a.m. after the man, who was alone in his room, said during a call to authorities that he wanted to harm himself. A SWAT team helped talk him out of the room by 2 p.m. The man, was not immediately identified, was taken into custody under the Baker Act.

The motel, which is northwest of Brandon and south of the Florida State Fairgrounds, was evacuated as a precaution.
