ST. PETERSBURG — A 43-year-old man was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday after battering his girlfriend and then barricading himself inside a home in unincorporated St. Petersburg, deputies said.

Deputies responded about 11:55 p.m. to a domestic battery call at 2840 60th Ave N., according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. Heidi Hayward, 45, told deputies that her boyfriend, 43-year-old Joseph Robinson, grabbed her by the hair, threw her on a bed and struck her multiple times.

Hayward told deputies that Robinson was still inside the home and had a gun. Robinson told deputies he was not coming out of his bedroom to speak with them.

As deputies tried to talk Robinson out of the house, they heard a single gunshot. Deputies set a perimeter around the house and evacuated nearby homes.

For more than four hours, deputies used an armored vehicle and a loud speaker to call out to Robinson but got no response. They entered the home about 5:18 a.m. and found him dead.

Deputies learned Robinson had recently made homicidal and suicidal threats, according to the Sheriff's Office.
