TAMPA — Firefighters rushed a 31-year-old man working aboard a ship docked near the Port of Tampa to the hospital Thursday morning after he fell more than 20 feet into the hull.

When firefighters responded to 1800 Grant St. just after 7 a.m., they found the man injured and in a constricted space of the boat, said Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Lonnie Benniefield.

Although it was not yet clear what had caused the man to fall, firefighters said he had fallen through a hole and into the hull.

It took rescue crews more than an hour to remove the injured man from the boat. A crane was used to move him from the ship to the dock, where he was met by paramedics, Benniefield said.

Emergency personnel transported the man to the Tampa General Hospital. His name and condition had not been released.
