Man sleeping in trash bin gets collected by garbage truck

ST. PETERSBURG — A man sleeping in a trash bin behind a St. Petersburg Office Depot was recovered by firefighters after the dumpster was emptied into a garbage collection truck.

Kevin Hallaran, 52, was only slightly injured Monday morning while inside the truck, which carried the contents from a Chinese restaurant and other garbage, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue officials said. The truck's driver, Antwian Scott, spotted the man moving inside the garbage using a camera that was placed inside the truck's hopper.

The truck stopped behind Po Folks Restaurant at 2001 34 St. N and firefighters were called to the scene. When they arrived, Hallaran was banging on the walls from inside the truck, and rescue workers lowered a ladder into the truck.

Hallaran was transported to Ed White Hospital to be treated for his minor injuries, according to authorities.
