CRYSTAL BEACH — Two men swam more than a mile to shore after their boat overturned in the Intracoastal Waterway on Sunday afternoon, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Joseph Edward Adamo and Calvin Bell were a mile or farther west of Crystal Beach when Adamo's 12-foot jon boat flipped over in rough waves about 10:30 a.m., the Sheriff's Office said.

Adamo, of Tampa, and Bell, of Port Richey, both 32, swam to shore, then knocked at the door of a home at 945 Port Seaside Drive to ask for help.

Deputies and Palm Harbor Fire Rescue personnel responded at about 2:20 p.m.

Adamo was treated at the scene and released. Bell was taken by ambulance to Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital in Tarpon Springs for treatment of injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.

Both men were wearing life jackets, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies with the Sheriff's Office Marine Unit deputies found the boat and towed it back to Pop Stansell Park in Palm Harbor, where Adamo picked it up.
