Motorcyclist dies in Land O'Lakes crash

LAND O'LAKES — A 57-year-old motorcyclist is dead after being hit by a car that swerved into his lane, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

John A. Lauer of Land O'Lakes was headed north on Oakstead Boulevard just south of Ashmonte Drive on his 2009 Yamaha motorcycle when he was struck about 11:24 p.m. Thursday. The other driver, Tegan Barbato, 34, of Land O'Lakes was headed south on Oakstead and "failed to drive within a single" lane and veered into Lauer's path, the FHP said. Lauer tried to avoid the crash by laying his bike down, but Barbato did not return to her lane and ran over Lauer, a report states.

Lauer died at the scene.

Alcohol and drug tests are pending, the report states. The incident remains under investigation.

The FHP asks witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to call (352) 797-5737.
