TAMPA — The new Tampa International Airport exit didn't cause any major problems for commuters Wednesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
There was no additional traffic delay and no accidents near the exit, which comes half a mile sooner for drivers coming north off the Howard Frankland Bridge, according to dispatchers.
Crews have worked a year to combine the exits from Interstate 275 northbound to both Kennedy Boulevard and Tampa International. The project was undertaken because drivers had a tendency to weave in and out of the lanes to get to the airport.
The new exit opened at 5 a.m. If drivers miss it, the next exit leading to the airport is about half a mile away at Lois Avenue.
Crews have to finish barrier walls, add signs and clean up. They should be done by November.
