New laser system helps Pinellas sheriff's investigators

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has bought a new laser system that can detect forensic evidence such as fingerprints, fibers and body fluids.

According to an agency news release, the Tracer Laser System allows investigators to find evidence that would otherwise be tough to spot. In a video demonstration of the tool, forensic science supervisor Anthony Anderson points the laser at a clear plastic sheet that appears to have nothing on it, revealing two handprints.

The Sheriff's Office purchased the system with a $47,500 grant from the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program through the National Institute of Justice.
