Unidentified man jumps to death from Sunshine Skyway

A man jumped from the Sunshine Skyway bridge Wednesday afternoon and died when he landed on rocks below, authorities said. Police got a call at 2:26 p.m. Wednesday about a man who had jumped from the bridge. He had driven north to the top of the bridge and parked his car, officials said. "He looked over the side of the bridge and jumped," said Lt. Joel Granata, spokesman for St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue. The fire department's marine and extrication teams and boats from Eckerd College responded to the scene, where traffic was backed up for some time Wednesday. The man's identity had not been released late Wednesday.
