Officials say home near sinkhole was mistakenly identified for demolition

LAND O'LAKES — Pasco County officials say they mistakenly identified a home near the Lake Padgett Estates sinkhole as condemned.

The county released a statement Tuesday saying that the house at 3203 Canal Place had been identified for demolition in error. Field crews misread a notice on the home that originally had been placed on it when the sinkhole opened in July, said Pasco spokesman Doug Tobin.

"We apologize for this error," Tobin said in an email. "Pasco County Emergency Management plans on developing new tags in the future to make it more clear to homeowners and field staff."

Five homes near the sinkhole were condemned by authorities earlier this month. Another two homes were destroyed when the sinkhole opened on July 14.

The first phase of sinkhole cleanup, which involved removing debris and stabilizing the crater's banks, wrapped up on Sunday, the county said.
