One dead, one seriously injured in U.S. 19 crash

HOLIDAY — Southbound U.S. Highway 19 is back open after a wrong-way, head-on crash that left one dead and another seriously injured.

It happened at about 5:45 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. A Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 24-year-old William R. Ankenbauer was going north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 19. when he smashed into a Chevrolet Silverado going south.

A Bayflight helicopter was initially called to the scene but was canceled due to weather, according to Pasco Fire Rescue.

Troopers said Ankenbauer, of Clearwater, was taken to Community Hospital in New Port Richey, where he later died of his injuries. The Silverado Driver, Franklin C. Catanzaro, 32, of Spring Hill, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in serious condition.

The crash remains under investigation. FHP asks that any witnesses call Cpl. T. M. Shields at (727) 841-4181.
