Palm Harbor motorcyclist dies in Sunday crash

PINELLAS PARK — A Palm Harbor man died after he was thrown from the motorcycle he was driving when it collided with a car.

James Russell Westling, 50, was driving a 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle east on Gandy Boulevard about 1:50 Sunday afternoon when a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta turned from 34th Street N onto eastbound Gandy into the path of the motorcycle. Pinellas Park police said Westling hit the car. He and his passenger were both thrown from the motorcycle.

Both were taken to the hospital where Westling later died. His passenger, Patricia L. Gabriel, 49, also of Palm Harbor, had injuries that weren't life-threatening, police said. Neither wore a helmet, police said.

The driver of the car, Morgan M. Dooley, 17, of St. Petersburg, was not injured.

The investigation into the crash is continuing. Police said Sunday that charges against Dooley are pending.
