PORT RICHEY — She hoped he would drink himself to sleep if she stepped outside for five minutes. They had been arguing Thursday night because her 16-month-old son was crying.
But when the woman went back in about 10 p.m., she found the drunken man in her son's bedroom. According to an arrest report from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, Anthony Elsesser was standing at the child's crib and covering his face with a blanket, choking him.
Elsesser, 37, of 11315 Rampart Lane was arrested on a charge of aggravated child abuse after the child's mother wrested her son away and called 911. His face and lips were dark blue, the report said, and he wasn't crying.
The child was taken to a hospital and survived.
According to the report, Elsesser told deputies he wasn't choking the child when the mother came in, rather trying to lift him from his crib because he was crying.
Elsesser was being held in the Land O' Lakes jail Monday on additional charges of battery of a police officer and resisting arrest, in lieu of $15,150 bail.
