NEW PORT RICHEY — The Pasco County Sheriff's Office debuted a new association this week, honoring some of the most important figures in public safety: police dogs.

The K-9 Association aims to raise money for the dogs' training, care and equipment, as well as to increase awareness about their role in protecting the public.

"These canines are extremely loyal, they're full of energy, and they're a force multiplier out there for protecting our citizens and our deputies," Sheriff Chris Nocco said during a news conference announcing the association. "These K-9s are invaluable to us."

Nocco said the Sheriff's Office hopes to expand its police dog force and improve resources for its retired dogs.

A 5K obstacle race called the Great Escape, to be held Saturday at the Land O'Lakes Detention Center, will be the first event to benefit the Pasco Sheriff's K-9 Association. For more information, see the Pasco Sheriff's K-9 Association Facebook page.
