LARGO — A deputy on his way to a call was involved in a car accident Thursday morning at Ulmerton Road and U.S. 19, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy and another driver were taken to the hospital and were expected to survive, investigators said.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Deputy Sean O'Brien was westbound on Ulmerton when he received a call for assistance from another deputy handling a nearby car crash. O'Brien, the Sheriff's Office said, turned on his patrol lights and drove slowly through a red light.

Near the frontage road to U.S. 19, deputies said, O'Brien was struck by a 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by Danielle T. Elliott, 52, of Tampa. The Corolla, after hitting the passenger's side of the cruiser, continued into a Honda Pilot, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the Pilot was not hurt. Witnesses said they heard O'Brien's sirens and saw his lights, according to the Sheriff's Office.
