LARGO — An Uber driver is in the hospital after he was shot in the abdomen early Tuesday morning while driving, causing him to crash his car.

Pinellas Sheriff's detectives in the robbery and homicide unit are investigating the shooting, which occurred around 4 a.m. near the intersection of Ulmerton Road and 40th Street N in the Feather Sound area.

Deputies found a damaged 2012 Chevrolet Malibu sitting in a construction area with Terence Baxter, 33, of Brandon, unresponsive in the front driver seat. It appears he crashed his car after being shot, the Sheriff's Office said.

Paramedics responded and transported Baxter to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Detectives say Baxter later told deputies that he had been "jumped."

He was on duty as an Uber driver at the time of the incident, deputies said.

There is no information on a suspect. An investigation is ongoing.
