Pinellas Park man survived jump off Sunshine Skyway Bridge

ST. PETERSBURG — A Pinellas Park man who jumped off the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Thursday survived, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The 36-year-old man was reported Friday to be in good condition at Bayfront Medical Center.

According to deputies, the man jumped from the center span about 1:30 p.m. He was still conscious after landing in the water and was picked up by a nearby boater, deputies said.

He was brought to O'Neills Marina and taken to the hospital, where he was reported in serious condition on Thursday. His medical condition was upgraded on Friday.

The impact of the fall — it takes 3.5 seconds to hit the water going about 75 mph — can rupture internal organs and fracture bones. It can also render someone unconscious, causing them to drown. But a handful of people have survived the fall over the years.
