Plant City police: Argument leads to hammer attack

PLANT CITY — An argument Saturday night at a Plant City apartment turned violent when a man attacked a victim with a hammer, police said.

According to an arrest affidavit, a man struck the victim's left thigh with the claw side of the tool. When Plant City police arrived, officers say the man admitted to the offense and showed an officer the hammer.

The man also told the officer several times that he would have the victim "dead within a week," the affidavit said.

The man knew the victim for two months, but the affidavit did not detail their relationship.

Dennis Christopher Gudgen, 36, of Dover, faces a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The affidavit noted he has a prior battery conviction. He was held Sunday in the Hillsborough County jail on $7,500 bail.

The Tyrone area of St. Petersburg is a little light on drinking spots, so the locals must have been happy when a long-running neighborhood spot — formerly Donk's Sports Tavern and Double J's Sports Bar — reopened earlier this year as the Joint.
