Police: Elderly man killed in St. Pete crash; other driver runs away

An 81-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash at 15th Avenue South and 25th Street late Wednesday night.

The crash, which occurred just after 9 p.m., resulted in one car turning on its side. A second car had its front smashed to the windshield.

There were reports of people trapped inside at least one of the vehicles and neighbors said one of the cars was on fire.

Police said the 80-year-old man, whose name was not released, was the driver of one of the cars. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His two passengers were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening, police said.

The driver of the other car ran away after the crash and police had not found him or her as of late Wednesday night, officers said.
