ST. PETERSBURG — A 16-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday near St. Petersburg High School after a school resource officer found a gun in his backpack, authorities said.
The teen brought the gun on school grounds to show another student, St. Petersburg police spokesperson Mike Puetz said. He also texted a photo of the gun to three other students.
After someone told a teacher, the SRO arrested the teen at about 1:30 p.m. near 9th Avenue N and 25th Street. He faces a misdemeanor charge of carrying a firearm.
Police do not believe the teen intended to shoot anyone, Puetz said.
St. Petersburg High School Principal Al Bennett notified parents about the incident Tuesday with a voice message.
"Please know that the safety and security of your child is our top priority," he said. "We have zero tolerance for weapons in our school."
