Power crew strikes, ruptures natural gas line in Brooksville

BROOKSVILLE — A two-block area in Brooksville had to be evacuated Wednesday afternoon when a Progress Energy crew struck and ruptured an underground natural gas line.

According to Brooksville Fire Chief Tim Mossgrove, power company crews were setting power poles near the intersection of Arnold Avenue and Sabra Drive — east of U.S. 41 south of downtown — about 2:30 p.m. when an auger bit broke a 4-inch gas line that serves about 25 businesses in the area.

Brooksville Police evacuated several businesses and homes and closed Buena Vista Avenue so that Tampa Electric Co. crews could close off a valve and repair the leak.

Mossgrove said no one was injured in the incident. TECO representatives said they expected to have gas service restored by late Wednesday.
