St. Petersburg car crash kills pedestrian crossing street

ST. PETERSBURG — A 59-year-old St. Petersburg man died Saturday night after a vehicle involved in a two-car accident struck him as he crossed the street, authorities said.

The crash happened just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Central Avenue and 58th Street N.

St. Petersburg police say the front of a 1996 Ford Thunderbird being driven north on 58th Street by Jayson Jaqua, 28, of St. Petersburg struck the right rear panel of a 2010 Toyota being driven east on Central Avenue by Ave Washington, 21, of St. Petersburg.

The Toyota slid eastbound, spun clockwise, then struck Isaac Rodgers, a pedestrian crossing Central, officials said.

Rodgers was taken to Bayfront Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 10:30 p.m., police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
