St. Petersburg car crash leads to drug charges

ST. PETERSBURG — A rollover crash on Friday led to drug charges for two people, authorities said.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2004 Durango exiting the Interstate 275 southbound ramp at Fourth Street lost control shortly after 2:30 p.m. The vehicle rolled several times.

After the accident, the driver and passenger, Wayne Owen, 45, of Parrish and Tonya Wimbley, 44, of St. Petersburg, tried to leave the scene.

They were stopped by citizens who told them to wait until authorities arrived, said Sgt. Larry Kraus, an FHP spokesman.

During the course of the investigation, troopers found marijuana and a large amount of cash in the vehicle, Kraus said.

Owen and Wimbley were arrested on charges of marijuana possession.

The crash was still under investigation Friday evening.
