St. Petersburg toddler nearly drowns in pool

ST. PETERSBURG - A 2-year-old boy nearly drowned this afternoon during a pool party, authorities said.

Emergency crews were called shortly after 3 p.m. to the 800 block of 63rd Avenue S., said Lt. Joel Granata of St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue.

When they got there, the toddler was unresponsive.

Paramedics performed CPR and used oxygen to get the boy's pulse back, Granata said.

"By the time they got him to the hospital ... he was crying," Granata said.

It is unclear how the child got into the pool.

Bystanders had already pulled the child out of the water and were attempting to resuscitate him when help arrived, according to Granata.

"It all contributed to a good outcome," Granata said.
