Swimmer goes missing off Fort DeSoto Park

Authorities were searching for a St. Petersburg man who went missing while swimming off Fort DeSoto Park Wednesday afternoon.

Kevin A. Persad, 29, was in the water with two friends near the north beach when he disappeared at about 3:30 p.m., according to authorities. One of the friends, Michael Moyer, used his cell phone to call 911, Pinellas sheriff's deputies said.

Witnesses told authorities Persad was trying to swim to the southern tip of Shell Key. Bunces Pass, an east-west inlet known for its strong current, separates the two beaches.

Divers from the sheriff's office and St. Petersburg Fire Rescue were in the water Wednesday afternoon looking for Persad. The Coast Guard also had boats and a helicopter involved in the search.

A Sheriff's spokesman said the search was postponed at sunset.
