TAMPA — Police in Pennsylvania took a Tampa-based US Airways mechanic to a hospital for mental evaluation after it was discovered he had stowed away on a flight Tuesday.
The man in his mid 40s sneaked into an unpressurized compartment of a US Airways flight from Tampa International Airport to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, said Lt. Richard Mullen, a spokesman for the Allegheny County police.
The stowaway, whose name was not released, then bought an employee ticket and flew in the plane's cabin to Pittsburgh.
"Someone from US Airways management asked us to meet him at the gate because he had expressed thoughts about harming himself," Mullen said.
Officers transported him to a hospital after the plane landed at 11 a.m. He hadn't been criminally charged in Pennsylvania, and there wasn't word yet on the possibility of any charges in North Carolina or Florida.
