CLEARWATER — A 31-year-old Tampa man drowned Tuesday evening about a mile south of Pier 60, authorities said.

Prafull V. Khachane and his wife were visiting the beach with another couple when Khachane went into distress, said Clearwater public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts.

At least three people who also were in the water tried to help but were unable to reach Khachane, Watts said. They called 911 about 6:15 p.m. after losing sight of him.

Firefighters pulled Khachane to shore after he was found about 100 yards out in the water. Despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at Morton Plant Hospital.
