Tampa standoff ends in suicide

A man shot himself to death Tuesday in his estranged wife's home, ending a standoff that brought Hillsborough County Sheriff's SWAT members to the scene.

Sheriff's office spokesman Larry McKinnon released this account:

Just after 5 p.m., the man's father — who lives in Lakeland — told the sheriff's office his son was driving in the Tampa area and had threatened to kill himself. Deputies found the man's vehicle at 14117 Stowbridge Ave., his estranged wife's home. Deputies called him. He said he was inside the home and would be coming out. He never came out and never answered his phone again.

About 8 p.m. the wife arrived and provided a key to her home. The sheriff's office sent a robot inside and the man was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. No one else was inside the residence.

The sheriff's office is still investigating and will release the man's name when his family members have been notified.
