Teen drowns in Tampa apartment complex pool

TAMPA — A 13-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool at a Tampa apartment complex Friday night.

At about 9:40 p.m., Aujonea Betts was swimming with her brother and sister at Melrose Court II apartments at 3903 W Cleveland St. Her sister was on the pool's steps and her brother was on his cell phone, the Tampa Police Department reported.

Her sister saw her splashing and playing, but later found her unresponsive at the bottom of the pool, police reported. Aujonea's father and siblings pulled her out and gave her cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Police arrived and continued the CPR, which was taken over by Tampa Fire Rescue. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The police are calling the incident an accidental death.
