TREASURE ISLAND — Fire Chief Frank Fernandez was fired Monday after only four months on the job.
Acting City Manager Amy Davis declined to give a reason, saying only that he had been on probation.
Fernandez, 53, previously was deputy chief of operations for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, where he first became a firefighter in 1983. During his tenure there, he also served as a division chief, shift commander and a battalion chief.
Three shift commanders for Hillsborough Fire Rescue recently came under fire for manipulating their time cards in order to get paid for time they did not actually work. Fernandez told investigators he had never similarly falsified his own time cards.
Davis said Fernandez's firing "had nothing to do with the situation in Hillsborough County."
