Woman lying in road is run over and dies

DADE CITY – A 23-year-old woman lying on a dark, isolated road was run over by a car early Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The woman, whose identity has not been released, died at the scene.

It happened a little after 2:30 a.m. on Blanton Road, just west of Interstate 75. The car involved was a 2002 Kia driven by Joanna Bartell, 27, of Lecanto.

"We have not figured out why she was in the road," said Sgt. Larry Kraus, spokesman for the Highway Patrol.

"It was a dark roadway in the middle of nowhere. The driver would not have been able to see her."

Toxicology tests on the victim to see if alcohol or drugs were involved are pending. A report says the woman killed was from Sarasota.
