Zephyrhills man killed in Ocala crash

Times staff

A Zephyrhills man died when he ran his motorcycle into the back of a mini van Sunday on State Road 40 in Ocala, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Lonnie C. Kirk, 58, was riding his 2007 Kawasaki Ninja west on SR 40 at about 9:30 a.m. when he came upon Richard Sanz, 70, who, according to an FHP report, was also driving west in his 1998 Chrysler Town and Country, well below the 55-mph speed limit.

The report didn't say how slowly Sanz was driving, but it did say Kirk was riding at about the speed limit.

When Kirk hit the van, he was thrown about 71 feet.

FHP Sgt. Tracy Hisler-Pace said it's not clear why Kirk didn't slow down in time to avoid the collision.
