CLEARWATER — After nearly 39 years as Temple B'nai Israel's spiritual leader, Rabbi Arthur I. Baseman is retiring. He is scheduled to step down June 15.

His replacement, Daniel Treiser, 36, will take over July 1 and lead his first service in front of the 525-family congregation July 4.

Baseman, a graduate of Harvard University and the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, came to Temple B'nai Israel in the summer of 1969.

During his tenure at the temple at 1685 S Belcher Road, Baseman, 70, "built a thriving early childhood center and has contributed to life-cycle events of thousands of people,'' according to the temple's executive director, Barbara Bloom.

"He's been the people's beloved rabbi for many years,'' she said.

He has bat and bar mitzvahed generations of young people, officiated at numerous funerals and assisted in numerous Jewish conversions.

But his departure has generated some buzz and conjecture, which neither the synagogue nor Baseman will discuss.

Baseman, who recently has suffered a bout of pneumonia, referred questions about his departure to his lawyer.

"As it came time for the rabbi to retire, there were issues on both sides, the synagogue and the rabbi,'' said Baseman's attorney, Lou Kwall. "After discussion, they were resolved.''

Kwall would not elaborate, saying "it's a private matter between the synagogue and the rabbi.''

Jack Geller, the temple's past president, said Baseman's retirement has "been on the books for some time.''

"We're not discussing anything that happened in our congregation,'' he said.

Treiser, now the associate rabbi of Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El in Plantation, said he is excited to start work.

"I was looking for a place where I could take the knowledge I've gained and help a congregation move to the next stage of its development (and) to build a brighter future for it,'' he said.

Treiser brings with him his wife Rachel, 33, an elementary and special education teacher, and children Elana, 6, and Ethan, 3.

He received his bachelor's degree in communications arts and sciences from City University of New York-Queens College in 1993 and his master of arts in Hebrew letters from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1998. He was ordained in 2000.

Treiser served as president of the Broward County Board of Rabbis from 2004 to 2006.

The temple will also welcome a new cantor, Jennifer Duretz, and a new director of education and programing, Amy Smyler McFarland.

Times researcher Carolyn Edds contributed to this report. Eileen Schulte can be reached at schulte@sptimes.com or (727) 445-4153.

Baseman bashers should be ashamed of themselves. Read the 9th commandment. If you think things are better in Palm Harbor, read the court file in Case No.06-8365 CI where the rabbi and temple administrator falsely accused a congregant of CHILD ABUSE.

Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to speak and prove it.

there has to be a bigger explanation. this is RABBI we are talking about. did we forget we live in a country that is "innocent until proven guilty"??? until this is a proven situation of his wrong doings, i stand by rabbi and believe in him.

It may be over, but the fallout could be enormus. I and others are leaving TBI. I think membership will decrease by as much as 30%. Just my 2 cents.
by Zulu May 19, 2008 1:01 PM
I don't think TBI wants any further involvement w/ the IRS. They still havent finished the tax evaison mess from last year!
by Zulu May 19, 2008 1:00 PM
If you wanted to keep things "quiet" regarding Rabbi, you didn't need to alert the congregation nor cancel all the retirement ceremonies. You created too much suspicon. People are going to inquire. Baseman is now gone, you reep what you sew, happy??

Your comments and some untrue remarks are not helping the Jewish Community. Leave it die and look forward to the new Rabbi and Cantor. Clear the atmosphere and move ahead on a friendly tone.
by sidney May 17, 2008 3:49 PM
its over. stop the mud . look ahhead. enjoy the future.make the atmosphere friendlier now.

Why does Rabbi have to have a criminal attorney, Mr. Kwall, to help him with his retirement?????? A criminal attorney???? That sounds suspicious.
by Axil May 16, 2008 3:17 PM
You people are doing terrible harm to TBI by publicly making such inflammatory remarks. At the annual meeting the board handled this situation appropriately. This is a personal matter. If you have a problem, call the board. Stop talking to the media.

Just because he is a rabbi does not make him above the law. The temple board should get to the absolutely bottom. Prosecute him and make him stand for his actions. He sole money from each and every temple member.
by Ellis May 16, 2008 2:05 PM
I would absolutely require him to submit his IRS returns for the last five years. If he refuses he should be turned over to the IRS for possible tax evasion. Just because he is a rabbi is no reason to be above the law. Come on Temple Board stand up
by zulu May 15, 2008 7:40 PM
D: Are you saying that rabbi was also responsible for the IRS issues and the need to borrow for the endowment fund? That's a reach that I think R.B. took to his grave.
by d May 15, 2008 5:34 PM
Try being damn lucky he is not in jail . A horrific story and someone who almost let his Temple close due largely to his greed . You have much to uncover.
by Don May 15, 2008 11:06 AM
About time. What is he? A supreme court Judge?
by M May 15, 2008 11:02 AM
Rabbi Baseman will always be my rabbi – retired or no. He's always been there for my family, in good times and bad.
by Jen May 15, 2008 10:54 AM
When you have to have a lawyer negotiate your retirement....something isn't kosher...
by Joe May 14, 2008 9:07 PM
Baseman is gone for other reasons. Dig a little deeper and tell the real story!
