Services, activities aplenty planned for Easter in Hernando

Along with traditional worship services on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, several local churches will offer a variety of events to celebrate the most sacred of Christian holidays.

First United Methodist Church of Brooksville, 109 S Broad St., will present a choral cantata at its 10:30 a.m. service Sunday. The church will also host a Palm Sunday picnic and egg hunt after the service at Tom Varn Park, 306 Darby Lane, Brooksville. Those attending should bring a covered dish to share and a 2-liter drink; grilled chicken will be provided by the church. The egg hunt is open to children through fifth grade. Destiny Baptist Church, 4244 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill, will have its second annual Holy Week service at 7 p.m. March 23. The service will include music, the Last Supper, the washing of feet and communion. There will also be light refreshments. Call (813) 334-0593 or (352) 688-9595.

First United Methodist Church of Spring Hill, 9344 Spring Hill Drive, will present a dramatization, "Is It I, Lord?" at 7 p.m. on Holy Thursday, March 24. The program is a re-enactment of the Last Supper, seen through the eyes of the 12 disciples, as they explain their thoughts in response to Jesus' statement that one of them will betray him.

"It's a very moving drama, and the audience will be invited to take Holy Communion using the elements that have been part of the Lord's table during the tableau," said Linda Rodriguez.

The Hernando Christian Ministerial Association and the Hernando County Family YMCA will offer a Good Friday service at 9 a.m. March 25 at 1300 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill.

"The Good Friday Interfaith Service is an inspirational community gathering that brings people of faith together to mark an important holy day with an inspiring message and ecumenical worship service in keeping with the Christian traditions of the YMCA," said Amber Slusser, executive director.

The Rev. John Hensel of Christian Life Assembly of God will give an invocation; Victoria Justiniano, assistant chaplain at the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, will lead congregational singing; the Rev. Matthew Everhard, pastor at Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church, will give the sermon, and the Rev. Joe Santerelli, pastor at Hillside Community Baptist Church, will close the service with prayer.

Ridge Manor Community United Methodist Church, 34350 Cortez Blvd., will offer a Good Friday service at 7 p.m. March 25 and a Kidz Easter Celebration, with games, relays and races, for children ages 3 to 12 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 26. Turning Point Church, 19384 Ingram St., Brooksville, will host the Gulf Ridge Quartet for a special Easter message in song at 7 p.m. Good Friday, March 25. An offering will be collected. Call (352) 796-4211.

A Good Friday Community Service sponsored by Community Bible Church, Courts of Praise Deliverance Ministries, Faith Evangelical Free Church and First United Methodist Church of Brooksville will be at 7 p.m. March 25 at the Brooksville Common, 109 S Broad St. In the event there is inclement weather, the service will be moved to the adjacent Methodist church sanctuary.

Grace World Productions, a ministry of Grace World Outreach Church, will present Messiah, a live theater production, at 7 p.m. March 25 and 6 p.m. March 26. The play follows a man named David as he learns what it means to truly be Christ's hand, feet and mouthpiece. The production features live animals and visual effects. An offering will be collected.

Also, the church will host its annual Easter Eggstravaganza for children through age 12 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 26. There will be an egg hunt, face painting, bubbles, balloon animals, bounce houses and door prizes. Children should bring a bag or basket. Food concessions will be available for purchase.

First Baptist Church of Spring Hill, 7279 Pinehurst Drive, will host an Easter egg hunt for children ages 2 through 10 at 11 a.m. March 26. Hot dogs, chips and water will be provided after the hunt. Monetary donations are appreciated, but not expected. Call (352) 683-2863.

Crosspoint Church, will host an Easter egg hunt from 10 a.m. to noon March 26 at Challenger K-8 School of Science and Mathematics, 13400 Elgin Blvd., Spring Hill.

Spring Hill Baptist Church, 3140 Mariner Blvd., will have its Easter Eggstravaganza 2016 at 10 a.m. March 26. There will be age-based egg hunts for children ages 3 through 12, as well as inflatables, games, prizes and a Gospel presentation.

Northcliffe Baptist Church, 10515 Spring Hill Blvd., Spring Hill, will host a Really Big Easter Party for children age 2 through fifth grade from 10 a.m. to noon March 26. The party will feature egg hunts, games, bounce houses and face painting — all in a carnival atmosphere.

"Our hope is to connect with the families and children around our community by providing a fun and exciting event and ultimately invite them to our Easter services," said Erin Mello, director of children's ministries.
