Swimmer found dead in Citrus County

CHASSAHOWITZKA — A college student swimming in an underwater cavern has been found dead.

Twenty-one-year-old Joseph Michael Kelly of Vero Beach was swimming with two friends Saturday night near the Chassahowitzka River Campground. Kelly never surfaced.

His body was found later Saturday night. An autopsy will be performed.

Kelly was a student at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

He was swimming after dark with two other men in an underwater cavern near the Chassahowitzka River Campground, according to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities got a call around 9:30 p.m. The other swimmers are safe, officials said.
